Aravind Srinivas: Perplexity CEO on Future of AI, Search & the Internet | Lex Fridman Podcast #434
Perplexity is an AI-powered answer engine that utilizes a Retrieval Augmented Generation framework to synthesize citation-backed facts from a custom-crawled web index, effectively eliminating the traditional link-based search model. By combining term-based and vector retrieval with model-agnostic large language models, the system optimizes for tail latency and hallucination reduction while adhering to a minimalist user interface designed for knowledge discovery. Moving beyond the high-margin advertising model, the company pursues a subscription-based strategy that leverages an "AI Complete" flywheel to refine its reasoning capabilities and position itself as a truth-seeking alternative to incumbent search providers.
