Bjarne Stroustrup: C++ Concepts - Constraints on Template Parameters
- Microsoft will soon incorporate concepts into its compiler.
- Full C++20 implementation is expected across all major compilers in 2020.
- Andrew Sutton's implementation has been available for four to five years.
- Concepts are already available in Clang and GCC for approximately two years.
- Previous efforts to finalize concepts within two to three years would have resulted in a C++11 release as C++06 or C++07.
- A 2002–2003 analysis by Gabby Dos Reis and Bjarne Stroustrup determined that proposed concepts were too conventional for C++ and inadequately supported implicit conversions, mixed type arithmetic, and mixed type computations.
- The earlier concepts proposal failed due to insufficient compilation speed, poor usability, and inadequate execution speed unless optimizers exceeded the state of the art at that time.
