What’s the difference between Loops and Funnels?
Definition of Growth Loops:
- Loops are closed systems where process inputs generate outputs that are reinvested to create additional inputs, creating a self-reinforcing cycle.
- This concept was popularized at Reforge by Greylock's Kevin Kwok and Casey Winters.
- Example: Pinterest's user onboarding generates content, which feeds search algorithms (input) to attract new users (output), where new usage begets further usage.
- Contrast with Funnels: Unlike funnels, which follow linear trajectories that often decay with scale, loops drive compounding growth.
Definition and Limitations of Funnels:
- Funnels (e.g., the AARRR framework: Awareness, Acquisition, Activation, Retention, Revenue, Referral) represent traditional, linear growth marketing paths.
- Structural Drawbacks: Funnels encourage siloed teams (e.g., brand vs. performance vs. product) that optimize in isolation, failing to reinvest outputs from one stage into the next.
- Performance Outcome: While practical for some sectors like e-commerce, funnel-centric models typically lead to performance degradation as a business scales.
Operationalizing Growth Strategy:
- Core Philosophy: Growth requires integrating distribution strategy directly into product strategy, harmonizing product, channels, and monetization rather than treating them as separate functions.
- Organizational Structure: Shifting from funnel-based to loop-based thinking necessitates cross-functional teams to avoid local optima and encourage interplay between acquisition and retention.

- Experiment One-Pagers: Any employee can submit a standardized document outlining the objective, hypothesis, design/resources, timeline, success metrics, and next steps for success or failure.
- Centralized Triage: Ideas are consolidated into a single prioritized list (e.g., a Google Sheet) accessible to the entire organization, showing running and historical experiments.
- Prioritization Framework (ICE): Ideas are scored and ranked using Impact, Confidence, and Level of Effort to balance high-impact opportunities against cost and risk, preventing a "test everything" approach.
