Pavel Durov: Telegram, Freedom, Censorship, Money, Power & Human Nature | Lex Fridman Podcast #482
Telegram CEO Pavel Durov guides the billion-user platform, which he owns entirely with a lean 40-person engineering team, to achieve 2024 profitability by prioritizing user privacy, speed, and self-funded innovation without external shareholders. Durov has repeatedly resisted state pressure from France, Russia, and Iran to compromise on encryption or censorship, facing arrest, travel bans, and poisoning attempts while maintaining a business model that relies on Premium subscriptions and blockchain integration rather than data monetization. This resilience is supported by Durov's extreme personal discipline and philosophical stance on self-restriction, which together sustain an ecosystem designed to protect free speech and technical sovereignty against both government censorship and addictive algorithmic models.
