Dave Plummer: Programming, Autism, and Old-School Microsoft Stories | Lex Fridman Podcast #479

Dave Plummer, Lex Fridman

Former Microsoft engineer Plummer details his evolution from a self-taught 1970s hobbyist to a key contributor on MS-DOS, Windows 95, and the Windows NT Shell, where he engineered critical components like Task Manager and Windows Activation. After founding a company that faced FTC scrutiny for aggressive marketing, he pivoted to current projects including the "GitHub Primes" performance benchmark, PDP-11 hardware restoration, and reinforcement learning for vector games. Plummer concludes by framing his autistic "monotropism" as a strategic engineering asset, arguing that future programming will rely on AI-driven architecture rather than manual syntax management.
